Welcome to the home of Wireless Communication Centre (WCC). WCC started in 1989 as Wireless Communication Research Laboratory (WCRL). In June 2003, WCRL was upgraded to the status of Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the MInistry of Education Malaysia. Since then, WCC has become one of the most active research centres in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

 

Research, development and commercialisation activities of the centre have increased drastically over the past few years. Currently, there are 13 academic staffs, 4 research officers, 2 technicians and 2 administration staffs. There are more than 40 local and international postgraduate students working on the research project related to wireless communication. WCC works closely with both local in international telecommunication operators, manufacturers and regulators such as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), Ministry of Defense Malaysia, Malaysia Centre of Remote Sensing (MACRES), Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia COmmission (MCMC), Petronas, Maxis, Celcom, MIMOS, ATSB and ANGKASA.

 

Currently, WCC is focusing on research products commercialisation, research contracts and consultancies. Most of the research are fully funded by grants from Science Fund, Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Intensive Research in Priority (IRPA), Industry Grant Scheme (IGS), Multimedia Grant Scheme (MGS), telecommunication operators and also from national and international key players such as Ericsson Telecommunication Sdn. Bhd., Perwira Ericsson Sdn. Bhd. NTT Docomo Japan and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

 

WCC has played a vital leading role in International Mobile Telecommunication 2000 (IMT-2000) standardisation activities in Malaysia. Various efforts have been taken in order to increase the awareness and understanding among players in local industries about the emerging wireless communicaiton technologies.

Objectives of Establishment

Wireless communication plays very important role within commercial, business and public sectors in almost all industrialised part of the world. Therefore, WCC has been established based on the objectives as stated below:

 

  1. To stimulate, encourage and enhance the quality of research, development and commercialisation in wireless communication.
  2. To conduct contract research and consultancy services for government and telecommunication industries related to wireless communication.
  3. To use latest facilities in order to provide technical training programs in the field of wireless communication.
