Overview

This programme is designed for candidates who wish to obtain more knowledge and skills in the area of Computer Science and to become an academician or researcher. Graduates from this programme will have necessary ground to pursue Computer Science at the Doctor of Philosophy level.

Programme Aims

The M Sc. Computer Science programme is aimed to produce computer science academicians and researchers that are able to independently acquire, develop and apply advance computer science knowledge and skills in solving computational problems. Students will be introduced to a breadth of advanced topics in various areas of computer science, in which current issues and developments are critically discussed. Active learning environment involving critical analysis of current literature in various computer science area is practised. Students are also expected to execute research based project to develop effective research skills in computer science.

Objectives

1. To produce graduates who are equipped with the ability to independently acquire, develop and apply advanced computer science knowledge and skills to solve problems

2. To prepare graduates to be competent researchers and academicians in areas related to computer science

3. To produce graduates who have the ability to pursue higher qualifications at PhD level

Type of Program

There are two types of programmes: Mainstream Programme (Program Perdana) and Part-time Programme. These programmes are usually conducted at UTM Skudai campus.

Mode of Study

Mode of study is a combination of taught course and research. The research component is carried out after the student has completed all the taught courses required.

Locations and Language

The programme will be conducted at Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor,and UTM City Campus with English as the language of communication.

Entry Requirement

Bachelor’s degree with honors in Computer Science or a related discipline; or for those without a good honors degree, candidates must have substantial working experience in the area.

Candidates are expected to have taken Data Base, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligent, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture, Computer Communication Network, Theories of Computer Science or similar subjects., failing which , they have to taken MCM 0133 Data Base, MCP 0053 Artificial Intelligent, MCP 0093 Software Engineering, MCS 0013 Computer Architecture, MCS 0023 Computer Communication & Network, and MCP0083 Theories of Computer Science respectively.

International Student Entry

International applicants to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia must satisfy academic admission and English language proficiency requirement (IELTS band 6 or TEOFL score of 550) and any other conditions specified. Students who do not fulfill English Language proficiency will be required to take an English exam upon registration, failing which, they have to register for English modules offered at the university.

Course Structure

All students are required to take University Elective Subjects (3 credits), Elective Subjects (18 credits) and a Master’s Dissertation (21 credits). The total number of credits required for the award of a degree is 42 credits.

Exit Points

Students may graduate after successfully completing minimum of 42 credits, and must obtain a final academic grade of at least 3.0 CGPA.

Malaysian Students

Full Time Study :
RM 1,766 per semester (1st semester)
RM1,416 per semester (subsequent semesters)

Part Time Study :
RM1,366 per semester (1st semester)
RM1,016 per semester (subsequent semesters)

International Students

Full Time Study :
RM 3,526 per semester (1st semesters) plus RM1,500 (bond)
RM3,176 per semester (subsequent semesters)

All payment should be made to “Bendahari UTM” via bank draft and addressed directly to School of Graduate Studies, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 81310 UTM Skudai, Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Takzim, MALAYSIA.

Career Prospects

Graduate of the programme can work as a Researcher, Academician, System Analysis, System Engineer, IT Consultant, Software Enginner.
