The Department of Structures and Materials is one of the main departments in the Faculty of Civil Engineering. The department is headed by the Head of Department whose responsibility is to oversee the various divisions under his jurisdiction. construction division.The divisions are the Structures Laboratory and the Materials Laboratory. Apart from the laboratories, there are heads of panels for four divisions as well as the course coordinators. The four divisions are analysis division, design division, material division and construction division. Directly under the heads of panels are the course coordinators for analysis division, design division, material division and Currently there are 65 staff; comprising Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, lecturers and technical support staff in the Department of Structures and Materials.

These constitute 13 technical support staff, 2 adjunct professors, 3 visiting professors, 56 active staff in the department, 9 active staff seconded to other departments, 3 staffs on full-time study leave, 6 staffs on part-time study leave and 1 staff on no pay leave. Altogether, there are 46 staff with PhD qualifications, 19 staff having Masters qualifications and 7 staff are chartered engineers. The staff comprise locals and foreigners, including 12 local Professors, 1 foreign Professors, 20 local Associate Professors, 3 foreigners Associate Professors, 16 local senior lecturers and 13 local lecturers.

The activities carried out by the Department of Structures and Materials throughout 2009 are; 1 APSEC conference , 1 short course on Euro Codes, 1 intellectual discourse on writing research papers, 4 colloquiums on fire engineering, research strategies, publications and post graduates, 2 workshops on skills for technical staffs and precast concrete, 1 major bridge model competition and 13 numbers of various meetings involving departments, management, panels, laboratories and special meetings.
