Civil Engineering Seminar is a compulsory course for the students to pass before they can graduate. This two-day seminar is conducted once a year during short semester for students who are in their 7th semester onwards. Generally, the venue for the seminar will be selected based on the centres. As an example, when the students are from Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur centres, the venue will be somewhere in Negeri Sembilan or Melaka to take into account the traveling time for the students.
The topics of the seminar cover all the areas in Civil Engineering including materials and structures, highways, geotechnic, hydraulic and hydrology, and environment. In addition, other topics such as safety and health, opportunities for continuing education in higher level, and how to become a professional engineer are also included. Speakers from the university and from practicing civil engineering-based organizations are invited to give the talk. Generally, the speakers selected for the seminar are someone who directly involved with the area of the talk and is a professional engineer. Students who take this course will have to abide to all the rules and regulations set for the seminar including ethical in dressing, behaviour during seminar, punctuality, and others.
At the end of the seminar the students will be asked to write a short report and fill questionnaire related to the seminar so that continuous improvement on the running of the seminar can be improved in the future. The questionnaires and comments from students will be taken into consideration for the improvement of the following seminar.
